Have you ever considered hiring an intern or a co-op student, but didn't know where to go for information? Read on!

Why Internships or Co-ops?

Many employers are discovering the advantages of hiring interns and co-op students.  Internships and co-ops are win-win situations for employers and students.

EMPLOYERS WIN
Employers provide pre-professional personnel who are relatively less expensive than professional staff, but are effective and highly motivated.  Employers have the opportunity to work with students interested in a specific career field.  Although time is invested in orienting and training the student, the student then works within the company or organization activities.  The company may wish to recruit and hire the student later, but employment is not a condition for an internship - learning is.

STUDENTS WIN
Students gain valuable knowledge by extending learning outside the classroom with real-world applications.  They also have the opportunity to explore their career interests while gaining valuable work experience.

How can the Office of Career Development (OCD) help?

The OCD coordinates an Internship Clearinghouse for the University and can market your internship and co-op opportunities to students.

Internships and co-ops may or may not be eligible for academic credit.  The OCD can also put you in touch with the appropriate academic department to discuss your opportunity for possible academic credit.  If academic credit is an option, students must obtain approval for academic credit prior to beginning an internship or co-op.

If you are interested in offering internship opportunities to students, the OCD has a new online job/internship posting service that is free to employers.  You will be able to reach more students with this new service because students can view your opportunities online at any time.  Log onto ecampusrecruiter.com/cnu.  (If you are a new user, click on the Employers icon to register first.) Simply log in to post your position.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION (Co-op)

Cooperative Education is an educational and training partnership between Christopher Newport University, the business community and CNU students.  A Co-op integrates learning with on-the-job work experience.  Students have the opportunity to work full-time or part-time in paid positions related to their career objective and/or field of study.  Co-ops require a written agreement between the employer and CNU.  If your company is interested in establishing or reviewing a blank co-op agreement with CNU, please call the Office of Career Development at 757.594.8887.
